Award Winners 2023

As is now customary the Enemed MAviO Awards for 2023 generated huge interest among the local aviation community at large. Captain Noel Abela won the Aviator of the Year award after the pivotal role he played in returning a stricken Air Malta aircraft back to Luqa. On 17th November 2022, Captain Abela formed part of a three-man cockpit crew who on the climb out of runway 23, experienced smoke in the cabin.  The twinjet levelled off at 2000 feet and after declaring a “PAN PAN PAN” landed on runway 31.

Colonel Mark Said was bestowed with the Leader of the Year award. After retiring from the Armed Forces of Malta. Colonel Said joined TM-CAD where he has been working incessantly to kickstart the Gozo airstrip project. Once completed this would give the local GA community including flight schools much needed respite from the congestion at LMML.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was handed over to Captain Ray Zarb. In recent months, his flight school, namely European Pilot Academy celebrated its 30th anniversary. Captain Zarb is regarded as the distinguished forefather of flight training in Malta and has accomplished a number of firsts in this important field including the opening up of campuses beyond our shores.
