Veteran TVM journalist and radio host Joe Dimech earlier in the day interviewed the winner of the Enemed MAviO Lifetime Achievement Award Lt Col Joseph Smith. Joe Dimech also took time to interview MAviO’s CEO Marvic Bugeja, who has been the mastermind together with the rest of the board behind the highly successful 10th anniversary event held in early May 2022.
Joe Dimech delved into Lt Col Smith’s career and achievements during his more than 25 years spent flying helicopters within the ranks of the AFM Air Wing. He also recounted in detail some of the heroic acts for which he was honoured including the major role he played in saving 7 people from sure death during the massive flooding that engulfed Marsa in 1979. Those same floods brought devastation to the island and left four people dead.
MAviO’s CEO Marvic Bugeja spoke about the plans in hand for the coming twelve months including the Enemed MAviO Conference & Awards being held on 8th May 2023. She explained how the meetup has morphed into Malta’s biggest aviation gathering for the local industry during the post pandemic period. Work is also being done on MAviO’s think tank, which is the only one of its kind on the island and wholly focused on the Maltese aviation scene. The think tank is chaired by Captain Sinclair Portelli with University of Malta senior lecturer Riccardo Flask and banker Joanne Calleja as members.
